- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2016In a sentence, why do I recommend this book? It's a 1-2 hour read to help you decide what impact email marketing will have on your own business and your own revenue, and how to deliver that impact.
What I liked about Email Marketing Fundamentals:
* The content strikes the balance between detail and brevity. You get enough content to know what to do next with your own marketing campaigns, but not so much content that you can't find the actionable takeaways.
* Plenty of empirical examples so that you know how the theory is applied in practice. This isn't a college textbook written by academics with no industry experience. This is a practical guide to email marketing to help you see results.
* Great starter resource if you know nothing about email marketing. The barrier to entry to understanding the concepts in Email Marketing Fundamentals is very accessible. Highly recommended for beginners as well as intermediates.
What I didn't like about Email Marketing Fundamentals:
* I wish there was a more detail about the tactics to all aspects of email marketing: different ways to collect emails, different calls to action, more examples of great email marketers' email lists to join to continue learning, more email marketing success stories, and more email marketing failure stories.
Overall this book is absolutely a no-brainer. I will be going out of my way to recommend this book to my friends.
DISCLAIMER: Although the author is my personal friend, he did NOT ask me to write a review for this book, and I will receive zero compensation for doing so.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2016It's obvious Carl is a leading expert when it comes to using email marketing to move the needle. You can tell this book was certainly a labor of love as it's well-written in conversational language and jampacked with actionable tips and strategies for finding success with email marketing. One of the most useful aspects of reading this resource was the breakdown of different types of emails to send, why to use them, when to send them and a pro tip on how to best use them based on their extensive experience. If you're looking to learn how to segment, measure and grow your email list from leaders in email, then this is the ideal read for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019This was written prior to the sweeping changes in GDPR (General Data Protection) that went in effect in 2019. Even though this is a European privacy law, most companies have clients world-wide so rules have changed for American based companies as well. The main effect of the new law on email marketing that the customer has to opt-in, you cannot contact people first and ask them to opt-out of they are not interested. The book does not cover this change and many changes in Google, Facebook, e-mailing compagne companies like MailChimp, and other marketing companies are very much out of date. Make sure you understand the current rules before you get yourself in trouble. This book has some good tips but badly needs a revision to bring in line with the current laws.
You should also be aware that the author recommends companies that charge $150 per month for their services (basic service) and $1000 per month (premium service).

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2016If you asked Carl Sednaoui how you should market your product or service, there's a 99% chance that he's going to say that email is the channel for you. And then you, having learned that channel selection should have something to do with the particulars of your market, would dismiss him as some kind of email zealot.
That would be a costly mistake.
In each of the chapters of his "Email Marketing Fundamentals," Sednaoui demonstrates his mastery of both marketing strategy and email as a marketing channel. He makes the kind of connections that probably allow him to market 99% of businesses -- successfully -- using email and perhaps using email alone.
Sednaoui does his best to set those of us with less email marketing experience up for success with some fundamental (see what I did there?) advice about what to do. Often short e-books give vague advice like "track metrics" or "make your email mobile friendly." Sednaoui takes the time to make his recommendations detailed and actionable.
I suppose I must mention that Sednaoui plugs his SaaS business for competitive email analysis (Mailcharts - it's cool), and the related consulting business a number of times throughout this ebook. And I suppose I must acknowledge that the majority of long-form content written by marketers lately is for the sole purpose of driving leads to their businesses. Meh.
Ultimately, I don't care why the guy wrote the thing. If you're looking for a (much) better than the average overview of email marketing, this one is a good choice.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2016Having worked in product development in the email marketing space for some of the largest and fastest-growing tech companies, I recommend everyone digest this book. It's a great foundation to getting started & has actionable content.
A thorough understanding of email marketing is the first step to successfully selling online. Should be a worthwhile read!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2016Clean, concise, and easily digestible overview of email marketing. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the topic. The book thoroughly covers a huge number of different types of emails and strategies that can be used for email marketing. Written by a full time email marketing consultant, which makes it all the more reliable, with examples from client projects peppered throughout the text. It also helps that the author is working on a product that catalogs huge numbers of other companies' emails, and you can see the benefits of this through the enormous number of real-world examples provided for each topic.
