Flip Book Fan: A Breezy Little Book Paperback – April 12, 2016

4.7 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

Literally the coolest book ever. Breezing through the pages of this handy flipbook offers the illusion of standing in front of a refreshing fan as it cycles back and forth. While clever colorful photos suggest a warm summer day, the cool wind produced by the movement of the pages will soothe away the heat.

Cool
You can almost hear the fan whirring as you spin through the 55 pages of this oversized flip book (see pic for height, length and width size comparison to standard flipbooks). Flip fast, and you imagine a super-heated day with a fan blowing at full power. Flip slow, and you picture a lazy summer day with a fan providing more sound than fury. Although many flip books tell a story, I liked the way artist Gail Borchert used an everyday, utilitarian object to highlight movement through still pictures. Fans, like wheels on a car, are like real-life flipbooks. When they move slow, you can see every single spoke or blade. When they move fast, their individual parts become a blur, but at some point in the rotation of a fan, the blades actually seem to be still, while fast-moving wheels on a car seem to be rotating backwards. This flipbook both plays off the idea of fans as a real time flipbook, as well as highlights their movement-defying properties. A smartly executed piece of work.

I love flipbooks and own several of them, mainly Fliptomania books. I saw this “Flip Book Fan: A Breezy Little Book” published by Chronicle Books in Amazon and thought it was quite funny, so I ordered it. The book measures approximately 4.5 x 3 x 0.5 inches, so it’s is bigger than the 4 x 2 inch Fliptomania books. The web page states that there are 112 pages, but there are only 56 because the pictures are just on one side. The fan appears to spin/oscillate as you flip through the pages, looking like a real moving fan. Also, the flipbook moves a bit of air while you’re “fanning” through the pages, so you could actually use it to cool yourself down a bit. So, it’s funny … and functional!

My autistic child has one love, and that’s FANS. He is mesmerized by everything fan. He collects and tinkers with fans all day long, and he reads books about fans and instruction manuals. He LOVES this flip book. It’s so unique and genius.

My 3-year-old grandson, who is obsessed with fans, enjoys this book. My only recommendation is that the book should flip over and have pictures on the back of the pages with a different fan.
