This book focuses on the development of commercial fishing vessel designs in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, starting with the surprisingly sophisticated small craft of the indigenous people, followed by the different directions resulting from the importation of designs by European settlers, and concluding with today's complex ships that catch fish in hundred-ton sets and deliver finished product to shoreside wholesalers. A wonderful collection of historically accurate drawings and illustrations compliments the well-researched text and brings the designs to life, while interviews with designers, builders, and fishermen fill out the historic tapestry. Drawing on Our History may be the first book that traces and describes the evolution of fishing-vessel design, construction techniques, and fishing methods for the entire history of a geographic region. Douglas M. Wolff, P.E., Naval Architect

Editorial Reviews

Review

Jim Cole's lifelong fascination with, and unbound enthusiasm for, the boats, shipyards, fishing methods, and the people involved in the fishing industry in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska shine through on every page of this book. His painstaking historical research, clear, understandable writing, and a profusion of accurate line drawings and pen-and-ink sketches (drawn with a seaman's eye) combine to educate and draw the reader into the time and place of the subject. Mr. Cole has produced an unusually interesting and valuable reference that will find a permanent place on my bookshelf. --Charles J. Cannon, P.E., Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering

If you have any interest in the development of fishing vessels - this book gives you an very good overview of the how and why a fishing vessel has evolved into the specialized format of today. Well illustrated with photos, drawings and construction plans. Good value for the money!

Mr. Cole's drawings bring those boats to life for me after crewing on various large fishing vessels in Alaska. I enjoyed the narrative interspersed with images that made me want to be there. Thank you!

Coming from a seafaring, boat building and fishing family I highly recommend this for accurate information. I was also very honored to meet Mr. Cole when he gave a presentation in Ketchikan, Alaska where I grew up. My great grandfather, grandfather and uncles built the Davis skiffs and seine boats, canoes, etc. in their boat shop in Metlakatla, Alaska for many years. I recommend this for a very interesting read and good information.

Just finished reading this book, written by one of my father's long time friends and associates, James A. Cole. Mr. Cole is, like my dad, a Naval Architect, but is also an excellent artist and his paintings add more then just color to the book. They also give a sense of the atmosphere, weather and conditions in which these vessels and their small crews lived and worked. The book also features some excellent interviews with now long-gone boat builders and fishermen...and in some of them be prepared for a sampling of Scandinavian humor. The book also includes numerous profiles and deck plans to give the reader the "shape" of things.

I know the topic is rather obscure, arcane perhaps, to many, but this is an excellent discussion of the history of fishing vessels from simple canoes to ultra-modern pelagic fishing vessels of today. If you grew up in, or now live, in the Pacific Northwest many of you will have seen boats like these and given them little notice or thought. The role the fishing industry has played in the PNW is unmistakable but it's equally remarkable that the boats that were and are this industry are remarkable in their own way. I highly recommend this one.
