- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2017If you have any interest in the development of fishing vessels - this book gives you an very good overview of the how and why a fishing vessel has evolved into the specialized format of today. Well illustrated with photos, drawings and construction plans. Good value for the money!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2016Mr. Cole's drawings bring those boats to life for me after crewing on various large fishing vessels in Alaska. I enjoyed the narrative interspersed with images that made me want to be there. Thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2020Coming from a seafaring, boat building and fishing family I highly recommend this for accurate information. I was also very honored to meet Mr. Cole when he gave a presentation in Ketchikan, Alaska where I grew up. My great grandfather, grandfather and uncles built the Davis skiffs and seine boats, canoes, etc. in their boat shop in Metlakatla, Alaska for many years. I recommend this for a very interesting read and good information.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2013Just finished reading this book, written by one of my father's long time friends and associates, James A. Cole. Mr. Cole is, like my dad, a Naval Architect, but is also an excellent artist and his paintings add more then just color to the book. They also give a sense of the atmosphere, weather and conditions in which these vessels and their small crews lived and worked. The book also features some excellent interviews with now long-gone boat builders and fishermen...and in some of them be prepared for a sampling of Scandinavian humor. The book also includes numerous profiles and deck plans to give the reader the "shape" of things.
I know the topic is rather obscure, arcane perhaps, to many, but this is an excellent discussion of the history of fishing vessels from simple canoes to ultra-modern pelagic fishing vessels of today. If you grew up in, or now live, in the Pacific Northwest many of you will have seen boats like these and given them little notice or thought. The role the fishing industry has played in the PNW is unmistakable but it's equally remarkable that the boats that were and are this industry are remarkable in their own way. I highly recommend this one.
